Manchester is the European City of Science 2016

The baton has been officially passed from European City of Science 2014, Copenhagen, to Manchester, European City of Science 2016

With a theme “Science as Revolution”, the accolade of European City of Science 2016 provides local scientists with a chance to shine in the global scientific arena, and is a superb opportunity to showcase the unique environment of the Manchester area to the world

Science is often thought of as nerdy, and could be said to be overlooked by the celebrity-obsessed mainstream media, but the American TV series “The Big Bang Theory” changed all that and made science cool and sexy

In the Manchester area we have many different types of scientists, from citizen scientists, to ecologists, to sports scientists, to melittologists, to ornithologists, with research being conducted at University of Manchester and University of Salford

2015 is the build-up year, and the main events are in July 2016, but with the whole year of 2016 labelled European City of Science, we have unique and favourable circumstances to promote the areas’ scientific talent, show off our wildlife and greenspaces, and introduce new scientific concepts such as Ecosystem Services (the economic quantification of how much our environment is really worth to us) to the general public

European City of Science status gave an economic, and global profile boost to Dublin (Ireland) in 2012 and Copenhagen (Denmark) in 2014 and now gives us here in the Manchester area a chance to take science to the next level
